HTC One X+ review: it's the One X, and then some

HTC One X review (UK version)

A spec bump in the middle of a product cycle? All the cool cats do it these days, even if they risk alienating customers who just bought what they thought was this year's flagship device. HTC has actually played this game for a while, first with the Sensation XE, which acted as a mid-term replacement for the original Sensation and now, with the One X+ which treads all over the One X's toes. However, with this latest handset, the manufacturer has some justification: the One X+ comes with 32GB or 64GB of internal storage, whereas the global One X maxed out at 32GB and the AT&T version was only 16GB. Since there's no microSD expansion on these phones, it's possible to argue that the One X+ is a sensible addition, which caters specifically to storage-hungry power users and audiophiles. (Note: We'll be reviewing the HSPA+ UK version of this handset here, and comparing it mainly to the HSPA+ One X. We'll test the US-destined LTE variant very soon.)

There are other improvements aside from the bigger storage option, of course. The NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor has had a speed bump to 1.7GHz -- perhaps in an effort to challenge the Galaxy S III's benchmarking might. There's a larger 2,100mAh battery to stay in step with that more power-hungry silicon; the front camera module has been replaced with a higher-res chip and better image processing; and, there's also some new audio circuitry to improve the speaker's sound quality. The One X+ also runs HTC's updated Sense 4+ skin, based on Jelly Bean, which will eventually arrive on older One-series phones as well. As for the rest of the spec sheet, all the good and not-so-good stuff from the One X has carried over -- the stunning 4.7-inch, 1,280 x 720 Super LCD2 display is still here, thank goodness, and so is the 8-megapixel f/2.0 rear camera. However, there's still only 1GB of RAM (LG and Samsung flagships boast double that). So, what's needed here is an upshot: if you haven't made the leap to a 2012 superphone just yet, how does the One X+ carry itself relative to its cheaper predecessor and the latest competition? Read on and we'll endeavor to find out.

Myanmar revises down death toll in sectarian violence

SITTWE, Myanmar (Reuters) - Myanmar authorities on Friday revised down to 64 the number of people killed in six days of unrest in the west of the country, after security forces opened fire to break up violence between Buddhists and Muslims.

A spokesman for Rakhine State, where the fighting took place, had earlier put the death toll at 112, but later scaled that back, blaming "clerical errors".

Still, the United Nations warned that Myanmar's fledgling democracy could be "irreparably damaged" by the clashes, which come just five months after communal unrest killed more than 80 people and displaced at least 75,000 in the same region.

Buddhist ethnic Rakhines told Reuters they were shot by security forces struggling to impose order on Rakhine State, where violence with Rohingya Muslims has engulfed several districts, including Kyaukpyu where a multibillion-dollar China-Myanmar pipeline starts.

The violence is testing the reformist government's ability to contain ethnic and religious tensions suppressed during nearly a half century of military rule that ended last year.

"The fabric of social order could be irreparably damaged and the reform and opening-up process being currently pursued by the government is likely to be jeopardized," a spokesman for U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said.

"The widening mistrust between the communities is being exploited by militant and criminal elements to cause large-scale loss of human lives."

At least 2,000 houses and eight religious buildings had been destroyed, according to state media. Nearly 100 people have been wounded, it said.

A Reuters journalist spoke to Rakhine people treated for bullet wounds and other injuries at a tiny, ill-equipped hospital in Kyauktaw, a town north of the state capital, Sittwe. One man died soon after arriving.

The military opened fire to prevent Rakhine villagers on two boats from storming a Rohingya Muslim community, said Aung Kyaw Min, a 28-year-old Rakhine from Taung Bwe with a bullet in his leg. "I don't know why the military shot at us," he said. Two people died and 10 were wounded, said the villagers.

In a separate incident on Thursday, security forces shot at a crowd of Rakhine protesters on Kyauktaw's outskirts, killing two and wounding four, said Hla Hla Myint, 17, whose forehead was grazed by a bullet.

The shooting is a sign that the military, which has been accused in the past of siding with Buddhists, is getting tougher following international criticism that Myanmar's new government was doing too little to protect Muslim Rohingyas.

    CHINESE INVESTMENT

There were widespread unconfirmed reports of razed homes, gunfights and Rohingya fleeing by boat, but access to Rakhine State was restricted and information hard to verify.

The United States, which has been lifting sanctions on Myanmar as relations improve with its quasi-civilian government, said it was deeply concerned over the violence and urged all parties to show restraint and halt attacks.

European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said she was deeply troubled by the violence, adding that it was a matter of urgency to provide unhindered access to humanitarian relief.

In Yathedaung, a town northwest of Sittwe, security forces opened fire in a Rohingya district and about 10 houses were burned, residents told Tun Min Thein of the Wan Lark foundation, which helps ethnic Rakhine Buddhists.

Earlier in the week, about 800 houses were burned down around Kyaukpyu, 120 km (75 miles) south of Sittwe.

The area is crucial to China's most strategic investment in Myanmar: twin pipelines that will take oil and gas from Kyaukpyu on the Bay of Bengal to China's energy-hungry western provinces.

"China and Myanmar are friendly neighbors," said Chinese Foreign ministry spokesman Hong Lei when asked on Friday about possible threats to the pipeline projects. "We hope that Myanmar can remain stable."

Rohingyas are officially stateless. Buddhist-majority Myanmar's government regards the estimated 800,000 Rohingyas in the country as illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and denies them citizenship. Bangladesh has refused to grant Rohingyas refugee status since 1992.

It was unclear what set off the latest arson and killing that started on Sunday. In June, tension flared after the rape and murder of a Buddhist woman that was blamed on Muslims, but there was no obvious spark this time.

Rights groups such as Amnesty International have called on Myanmar to amend or repeal a 1982 citizenship law to end the Rohingyas' stateless condition.

In Washington, the State Department has urged Myanmar to grant full humanitarian access to the affected areas, launch a dialogue aimed at reconciliation, and open investigations into the violence.

Chinese Black Fungus: Health Supplement and Diet Aid | Sheffield ...

You are here: Home / China General / Chinese Black Fungus: Health Supplement and Diet Aid

Can fish and meat textures and tastes be found in a vegetable? Chinese Black Fungus is renowned for these qualities, its vital nutrients and its valuable contributions, as a dietary supplement, to overall fitness and health.

Chinese Black Fungus is usually obtained in dried packaged form as it requires prolonged drying and washing processes before becoming ready to use.

Chinese Black Fungus in Dried Form: Extensive Soaking and Washing is Needed Before Use

Eating Black Fungus regularly enriches blood and prevents iron deficiency anemia. Western medical science has found Black Fungus very effective in blood viscosity modulation as it inhibits platelet aggregation thus lowering blood-viscosity levels. In Traditional Chinese Medicine its applications include anemia, haematemesis, uterine bleeding, hemorrhoids, high blood pressure and coronary heart disease. It also figures significantly in cancer prevention and relief.

Black fungus is a very common and inexpensive ingredient on Chinese dinner tables. It also has been recognised within TCM as a medicinal food. For thousands of years Black Fungus has been known for its rich nutrients such as iron, protein, fat, vitamins and polysaccharide. It is also a valuable source of vital trace elements like potassium, selenium and manganese essential to the body?s long-term health.

Black Fungus? bittersweet taste is not particularly strong, its texture is decidedly meat-like however. Black Fungus? presence in dishes serves rather to enhance the flavours of the main ingredients

Black Fungus is also a potent ally in the fight against obesity. Whilst very low calorie, its meat-like texture (and taste) when boiled make its consumption particularly appetite satisfying. It is frequently added to other dishes to ?enrich? them, to bulk these up for dieting/ slimming purposes as well as for its valuable contributions to overall nutrition.

Definitely not ?fast-food? Black Fungus needs extensive soaking and cleaning before use. Available from most Chinese supermarkets, Black Fungus is sometimes stocked by inner-city branches of Tesco.

?Fat Busters? to Enjoy Alongside Black Fungus

Keen dieters can wash down their Black Fungus with other
proven Chinese ?Fat-busting? slimming, weight-loss and nutrition aids like Green Tea (Lu Cha) and Bojenmi Tea.

Green tea stimulates the heart, aids digestion and banishes fatigue. Encouraging fat metabolization ad used extensively in dieting and slimming, it also encourages general bodily detoxification.

Anaemia sufferers and women during their menstrual period should avoid Green Tea as iron absorption is inhibited somewhat by regular consumption. Such individuals should switch to Bojenmi Tea (see below) and/ or consume Black Fungus to make up for iron deficiencies.

Baojianmei Janfei Cha (Bojenmi Cha for short) also known as
?good health, nice appearance flesh-reducing tea? is used extensively in slimming and to induce weight loss. A blend of 12 medicinal herbs based upon an ancient Ming Dynasty herbal remedy, this delightful tasting tea also aids digestion and lowers cholesterol levels. It also has a mild laxative effect

The two teas help flush out fatty deposits from internal systems. Inexpensive Green Tea?s fat removal effect?s are such that Chinese restaurants use left-overs to clean grease from surfaces at closing time.

Details of their constituents, operations and effects can be found elsewhere (1). Black Fungus, Green Tea and Bojenmi Tea all have internal cleansing, detoxifying and longevity-inducing effects encouraging their inclusion in anti-aging dietary regimes and all three can be found in most Chinese Supermarkets

Lena Dunham's sexy Obama ad: Youthfully alluring or bad taste?

The star of 'Girls' has cut a YouTube video for the president discussing her 'first time.' It made the Vote kind of uncomfortable, but then, we're not the demographic Obama is trying to reach.

    By Linda Feldmann,?Staff writer / October 26, 2012

A screenshot from Lena Dunham's YouTube ad from President Obama.

Love it or hate it, one thing is certain about Lena ?Girls? Dunham?s suggestive new ad for the Obama campaign: She has created buzz.

Skip to next paragraph Linda Feldmann

    Staff writer

Linda Feldmann is a staff writer for the Monitor based in Washington.

And buzz is good when you?re president of the United States and relying on young voters to pay attention to the fact that the election is less than two weeks away.

If you don?t know who Ms. Dunham is, the ad is clearly not meant for you. But in certain circles, she?s a rock star. Or at least an edgy, indie TV star, creator and lead character of the HBO series ?Girls.?

?Your first time shouldn?t be with just anybody,? Dunham says to the camera in a giving-advice-to-a-girlfriend tone. ?You want to do it with a great guy.?

She?s talking, it turns out, about her first time voting, not, um, something else. But for a full minute, she?s all about what the ?first time? should be like ? doing it with ?someone who really cares about and understands women,? someone who cares about birth control and who brought the troops out of Iraq.

OK, so maybe it?s clear pretty soon into the one-minute video that Dunham is talking about voting for President Obama, but still. To people of a certain age ? as in, people old enough to have a kid her age (like, maybe, this correspondent) ? there?s a certain ?ick? factor. As of 2 p.m. on Friday, the day after the ad was posted on YouTube, it had more than 275,000 views, with 5,014 ?likes? and? 6,807 ?dislikes.?

The comments went back and forth.

?As if American women don?t already have enough disrespectful, perverted men in the form of classmates, colleagues, bosses, journalists, musicians, entertainers, film and TV writers and producers, and men we encounter anywhere we go, talking to and about? us as if we were the slutty bimbos they wish us to be, we now have to hear it from the president of the United States, as well?? writes gtgirl197.

?This creeps me? out in so many levels,? writes grizzlyadam26.

?Fabulous lady!? Haters step aside,? writes Fishburgesa.

The conservative Independent Women?s Forum (IWF) reacted with disdain.

"This ad simply proves that the Obama campaign?only knows how to speak to one specific type of woman,? writes Hadley Heath, senior policy analyst at the IWF. ?And I?m proud to?say I am not that type of woman.?

Members of the young Hollywood set tweeted support. ?My favorite chick strikes gold again! Brilliant,? wrote Nina Dobrev, who stars in ?The Vampire Diaries.?

Unfortunately for Mr. Obama, Ms. Dobrev is Canadian. But she has almost 3 million Twitter followers.

Even if a lot of people are put off by the ad, what?s the down side? It's not going to dissuade a possibly creeped-out Obama supporter from voting for him; young conservatives weren't going to vote for him anyway. And if it plants the voting idea with a few young adults in key swing states, then it will have been worth it.

Seven, minimalism and silliness in roleplay form

So I am currently sitting on an idea. A delicious idea, but not much more than that. A group of people wake up in a red, circular room. Each comes from a different country in a world very like our own dear Earth. They must find a way home, using their own memories and what they discover in this strange new place they've been dumped in. So far, pretty standard. The important bit is how this is going to be approached.

To cut right to the meat, you, the characters, cannot control the environment or those NPCs whom occupy it. You can affect it via actions, but the results will be provided by my own running commentary over the entire thing ala Tabletop RPGs. Likewise, anything that happens to you will happen in such a way as to give you an out. It may not be a possible out, but it will be there never the less. Action or reaction, but never both for the same event. Of course, if you have multiple characters, which I may waive, it'll get all fuddy-duddy.

Second bit, this will be taken very flippantly. While you may be facing a dragon (you won't) or dismembered by a passing axe-trap (not going to rule it out), you might also meet a talking fish that swims through rainbows, or enter a snarking competition with a local evil overlord. Indeed, you may snark him down SO badly he dies. Alternately a raging narwhal might kill him.

Finally, just to make everything a total mess, I have a D20 on my desk. This D20, as I've learned through years of tabletop roleplay, is an utter bastard. This D20 will decide everything that happens in the game. You open a door? Role D20. A raving berserker runs in and is all up in your face? Roll D20. If needed I may fudge the rolls, but this little edge of randomness, I've found, keeps everything running much more enjoyably. I won't roll it for the actions of the PCs, only the actions and reactions of NPCs and the environment.

Ah, I did run something similar to this before. Although it did not have a name starting out, by the end of the second session it had earned the name "Blood for the Blood God". No, not that one, probably. It was entirely ridiculous.

Speaking of that last one, it was arranged somewhat differently to what I've described above. There was just the one character with three people controlling it. It went exactly as well as you'd expect.

So I guess this has become an interest check for two roleplays. The second one would involve getting a bunch of people into an IRC or other chat channel and trying to get them to reach consensus long enough to tell some poor person what to do. It's surprisingly...

Odd. I'll go with Odd. Other than the scope of characters, it will follow an equally bizarre approach to reality. Nothing is possible, unless D20 says so, in which case EVERYTHING is.

That rapidly became a meandering mess. Ah well...

PFT: Bills' Mario Williams has wrist surgery

Washington Redskins v New York GiantsGetty Images

Week Seven was a very lucky week for yours truly.? With an unlucky 13 games on the schedule, I got 12 of them correct, with only a late comeback from the Titans blocking an unprecedented piece of perfection.

More importantly, MDS and I disagreed on three games.? Thanks to the Cowboys, Saints, and Colts, my two-game season-to-date lead has been extended to five games.

For the year, I?m now 67-37, and MDS is 62-42.

MDS will join Thursday?s PFT Live to discuss this week?s picks.? There will be no gloating.

    At least not by him.

    Buccaneers at Vikings

MDS?s take: After I was burned by picking the Bucs last week on the way to going 0-for-3 on games where I disagreed with Florio, I?m playing it safe this week. Tampa Bay still looks to me like a team that?s headed in the right direction, but right now the Vikings have too much for the Bucs on both sides of the ball and should win this one comfortably.

    MDS?s pick: Vikings 27, Buccaneers 13.

Florio?s take:? The Vikings get a chance to show how different they are this year against one of the teams to whom the Vikings blew a big halftime lead last year.? This time, if the Vikings are up by 10 or more at the break, look for them to close it out with a defense that finally is good enough to hold leads.

    Florio?s pick:? Vikings 21, Buccaneers 19.

    Panthers at Bears

MDS?s take: Cam Newton is going to bounce back from this slump he?s in eventually. He?s too talented not to. But the Bears are the wrong team for a young quarterback to bounce back against. Chicago?s relentless pressure will force a few turnovers and lead to another loss for the Panthers.

    MDS?s pick: Bears 20, Panthers 10.

Florio?s take:? Rattled by the ouster of G.M. Marty Hurney, racked by injuries, and reeling from the sad-sack demeanor of Cam Newton, the Panthers are poised to get plastered.

    Florio?s pick:? Bears 31, Panthers 10.

    Chargers at Browns

MDS?s take: The Chargers have had two weeks to lick their wounds after that disastrous Monday night meltdown against the Broncos. They?ll come in to Cleveland focused and motivated and win this one comfortably.

    MDS?s pick: Chargers 31, Browns 17.

Florio?s take:? If Mike Holmgren?s current team can knock off the Chargers, the Chargers could be Mike Holmgren?s next team.? Though a house-cleaning could still be coming, the Chargers will likely do enough to reverse a bad two weeks of blown leads and stickum, allegedly.

    Florio?s pick:? Chargers 24, Browns 17.

    Seahawks at Lions

MDS?s take: Mistakes keep killing the Lions, whether it?s penalties, turnovers or special teams coverage breakdowns. If the Lions could get out of their own way they could go on a run down the stretch and still contend for a wild card berth, but that doesn?t look likely at this point. Seattle is the team that looks like a playoff contender, and the Seahawks will take another step in that direction with a win on the road.

    MDS?s pick: Seahawks 17, Lions 14.

Florio?s take:? If this one were set for Seattle, it would be a no brainer.? In Detroit, the Seahawks have an opportunity to prove that they?re capable of beating better-than-bad teams in a place other than CenturyLink Field.

    Florio?s pick:? Seahawks 17, Lions 16.

    Jaguars at Packers

MDS?s take: In the biggest mismatch of the week, the Jaguars? offense will look even worse than usual without Maurice Jones-Drew, and Aaron Rodgers will have his third consecutive huge game.

    MDS?s pick: Packers 34, Jaguars 3.

Florio?s take:? The Packers have never beaten the Jaguars at Lambeau Field.? Then again, these teams have played there only once.? The Jags will want to forget their second trip to town.

    Florio?s pick:? Packers 45, Jaguars 21.

    Dolphins at Jets

MDS?s take: I?m impressed that the Jets aren?t going down without a fight. When they lost Darrelle Revis and got blown out by the 49ers, I figured the Jets were finished, but they?ve played good football for the last three weeks, even if they have only one win to show for it in those three games. The Jets will beat the Dolphins in a low-scoring game and get back to .500.

    MDS?s pick: Jets 13, Dolphins 10.

Florio?s take:? Despite the injuries and the ineffectiveness and the uncertainty, the Jets have improved over the past few weeks.? They?re good enough to complete the sweep of a Dolphins team that has improved even more discreetly.

    Florio?s pick:? Jets 30, Dolphins 20.

    Falcons at Eagles

MDS?s take: The Eagles know their backs are against the wall, and the Falcons have been scraping by with three straight close wins. This looks to me like the day when the Falcons? luck runs out, and the last unbeaten team in the league gets beaten.

    MDS?s pick: Eagles 24, Falcons 21.

Florio?s take:? Andy Reid is 13-0 after the bye week.? Sometimes, there?s no need for elaboration.

    Florio?s pick:? Eagles 24, Falcons 23.

    Redskins at Steelers

MDS?s take: The Steelers took a big step toward the playoffs with last week?s win in Cincinnati, and I like them to keep it going against the Redskins. Look for Steelers tight end Heath Miller to have a big game against the Redskins? defense, just as Giants tight end Martellus Bennett, Vikings tight end Kyle Rudolph and Falcons tight end Tony Gonzalez have in the Redskins? last three games.

    MDS?s pick: Steelers 28, Redskins 27.

Florio?s take:? The Steelers are 20-2-1 at Heinz Field against NFC teams.? But Heinz Field has never seen anything like RG3, who?ll run circles around a Polamalu-free Pittsburgh defense.

    Florio?s pick:? Redskins 23, Steelers 20.

    Patriots at Rams

MDS?s take: The Rams? secondary has been playing well and the Patriots? secondary has been leaving receivers wide open, and I?m tempted to pick the upset for that reason. But with Danny Amendola hurt I don?t think the Rams have the ammunition to take advantage of the Patriots? problems on defense, and I think New England?s running game can churn up yardage at Wembley Stadium and lead the Patriots to a low-scoring win.

    MDS?s pick: Patriots 16, Rams 10.

Florio?s take:? The team whose name pays homage to the men who kicked the butts of the Brits like to kick butt in Britain.? Though it won?t be a blowout like it was three years ago against the Bucs, the Pats should be able to build a fourth-quarter lead.? And hold it.? For a change.

    Florio?s pick:? Patriots 27, Rams 21.

    Colts at Titans

MDS?s take: Titans running back Chris Johnson took advantage of a bad Bills defense last week, and he should be able to take advantage of a bad Colts defense this week. Johnson will go for about 150 yards and the Colts? offense won?t be able to keep up.

    MDS?s pick: Titans 28, Colts 21.

Florio?s take:? The winner of this one won?t likely challenge the Texans for the division crown but would be very much alive for a wild-card berth.? The Titans continue their knack for playing in ? and winning ? exciting games.

    Florio?s pick:? Titans 27, Colts 24.

    Raiders at Chiefs

MDS?s take: I?m not a believer in Brady Quinn as the Chiefs? long-term answer at quarterback, but as a short-term fix who won?t turn the ball over as often as Matt Cassel, Quinn should be able to lead Kansas City to a home win over a bad team.

    MDS?s pick: Chiefs 20, Raiders 16.

Florio?s take:? Oakland has won five straight times at Arrowhead Stadium.? With an extra week to prepare and everyone on the hot seat, if the Chiefs don?t beat the Raiders at home now, they possibly never will.

    Florio?s pick:? Chiefs 24, Raiders 10.

    Giants at Cowboys

MDS?s take: Completing a season sweep of the Giants would go a long way toward getting the Cowboys into playoff contention, but I don?t see it happening. The Cowboys? defense will miss linebacker Sean Lee, Giants quarterback Eli Manning will have a big day, and the Giants will improve to 4-0 all time at Cowboys Stadium.

    MDS?s pick: Giants 31, Cowboys 20.

Florio?s take:? The Cowboys aren?t nearly as good as they were in Week One, when they beat the Giants in New Jersey.? The Giants are the same, but this time they won?t get complacent.

    Florio?s pick:? Giants 35, Cowboys 27.

    Saints at Broncos

MDS?s take: Two future Hall of Fame quarterbacks will be on the field in Denver, but Drew Brees has to play against a good Broncos secondary, while Peyton Manning gets to play against a terrible Saints secondary. Advantage Peyton.

    MDS?s pick: Broncos 42, Saints 21.

Florio?s take:? When he was the head coach of the Panthers, John Fox held his own against Sean Payton?s Saints.? This time, Fox has a great quarterback ? and the Saints don?t have Payton.

    Florio?s pick:? Broncos 38, Saints 28.

    49ers at Cardinals

MDS?s take: The Cardinals? great start to the season may come to a screeching halt on Monday night.? A home loss to a division rival would be tough for Arizona to overcome, and a win at Arizona will be another step for the 49ers toward establishing themselves as the clear favorites to win the NFC West.

    MDS?s pick: 49ers 20, Cardinals 13.

Florio?s take:? Once atop the NFC West, the Cardinals are close to completing their slide to the basement.? Blame it on the lack of a high-end quarterback and an offensive line to protect him.

    Florio?s pick:? 49ers 24, Cardinals 13.
